Wikipedia was very informative on the issue (check out the article on Computus if you are interested). I guess that I should work to contribute an article or two in my area of expertise...

I knew that there was a good reason I hadn't been reading the local news recently...the Utah state legislature is in session. They seem to just be so stupid that I am upset nearly every time I read about what they are doing. Allowing undocumented students to receive UT residency status isn't encouraging law breaking. It is consistent!!! These are people who have lived in the state for just as long as the other students getting UT resident status. If the law about illegal immigration was enforced this wouldn't be a problem. If someone is here and meets the qualifications to be a UT resident they should get residency status. If you just enforce the laws on the books then undocumented students won't be in the state. It is pretty simple as I see or am I missing something?

Here we go again...it is time for the Utah legislature to start up again. The public clearly wants to increase spending on public education which is severely under funded. However the "smart" politicians tell us that what we really want is a tax cut. Can we just vote them all out? They are morons.

Look Mr. Legislator...I have already paid you my tax money. Don't try to give it back first of all. Second, Utah state tax isn't killing me financially. I am however embarrassed at the level of funding give to our public schools. I am horrified at teacher salaries. Please, please do something to fix these problems.

Beckham is coming to MLS and I am SHOCKED. Many people will say that Beckham is riding the bench at Real Madrid and is over the hill. I don't agree with those statements. Capello has come in at Real Madrid and tried to clean house and usher out the "Galacticos" era. Putting Beckham on the bench is just a part of that process. Did anyone see him at the World Cup? He was spectacular at what he does...cross the ball and free kicks. Beckham has never really been much more than that. He is also a reasonably good leader for a team. I don't think that Beckham is washed up at this point in time. He is probably a bit demoralized about being dropped from the England squad and the Real Madrid first team. Neither team is playing very well without him though. I really thought that if he wanted to move to a different high profile European team he could start and possibly win back his spot on the England team. Coming to MLS all but takes him out of the running to make it back to the English national team. It is almost like he has given up. That is why the deal is SHOCKING to me. I am not surprised that MLS wanted him. I am not surprised that the LA Galaxy signed him. I am not surprised that he wanted to market himself in the U.S. I am surprised that he did it now when he still has a few good years in his legs.

Will this make soccer in America more popular? I don't know. The media interest is certainly growing and more people will watch a game here and there. That is probably a good thing. What I actually hope is that other players who are struggling at big European teams, but not quite past their prime will consider coming to MLS and playing (Henrik Larsson...next year? Please!). That would be a big deal. That trend could eventually mature to having some players consider coming over in their prime. That probably won't happen for a while if ever, but this is certainly a step forward. It should be good to see a few crazy amazing free kicks out of Beckham during the last half of the MLS season. Good stuff...I hope it works out well for everyone involved.

I am not really sure what to say about this one. I agree with the article and think that online etiquette is really bad. I think he get the solution slightly wrong. I also think that folks are less courteous in general these days...not just online. It is really sad.
